Yesterday started out with another off-site meeting, this time to scout out the Super Bowl game day parking location for our volunteers. We’ll be at a college, which is perfect because they’re already used to parking and herding large numbers of people.
When we got back to our show compound we (Holly, Bryan, and I) participated in filming an audience instruction video for halftime show. Choreographer KP Terry (who is in charge of actually getting the audience to participate) rounded up 25 people and gathered us on the bleachers at the practice field in front of a video camera. She taught us what to do and we demonstrated maybe ten times for the camera. They’ll edit it together (with slow motion!) and show it on the jumbotron on game day. It was fun, if a little cheesy, and I can’t wait to see what the final version will look like! (Notice how vague I’m being? That’s on purpose. All the details, of course, are supposed to be a surprise.)
After lunch at our favorite Greek diner (they had spanikopita this time!) we got ready for the evening practice. In a brilliant inspiration it was decided to start practice with the stage already put together on the field. That way the volunteers could take it apart and put it together a couple times and still end practice on time. Last night we had a lot of people who were really late because Pro-Bowl ticket pick-up was from 7:00-9:00 (They just give away most of those tickets. I had no idea.). Some folks waited and came after getting their tickets (which made them about an hour and a half late) and some left in the middle to go get them and then came back. We had a bunch of new people, but we also had quite a few who had come on Monday who did not come last night, so numbers-wise we were almost exactly the same. We still need more people. Hopefully tonight will be better. It’s always a bit of a balancing act to make sure we have enough volunteers, but not too many.
The stage pieces themselves are getting added to every day. The light people are adding lights; the audio people are adding sound equipment. Each piece just keeps getting heavier and heavier, and therefore harder to maneuver, at each practice. So if you know any big burly, really strong people who are in the Miami area, send them our way! Here’s the website to volunteer!
